A glittering career sometimes hides many a sad story beneath. A winner of both the USA and World champions in hurdle events, Lolo Jones has reached her current position after many years of hard work and an enormous amount of perseverance. Jones was the sole member of a family with five children who lived in extreme poverty. Her mother was constantly on the move and even been living in a basement church for some period of time. Jones was required to relocate to another school every during her high school years as a result of her nomadic life. Jones was forced to move away from mother in Theodore Roosevelt School in order to pursue her interest in track. Jones lived with four distinct families, which helped keep her study focused. Jones was awarded the Gatorade Iowa Track & Field Award for the Best Athlete in high school. She was involved in the orchestra at school, playing a cello player.
